Curb Appeal Refresh & Pet Friendly Backyard

Residential

This project involved both a full refresh in the front yard and a newly designed space in the backyard. Water issues in the front were resulting in mud on the driveway and the plantings were not as diverse as the homeowner desired. The backyard had more than ample shade, leaving more mud than grass for their pets to play in, which often resulted in a daily bath.

Front Yard

To address the water issues that caused mud to build up on their driveway, we widened the dry creek bed and added a catch basin.

The homeowner had some beautiful plants, especially several established hosta. The existing design, however, lacked multi-season color with the largest display during the spring season. To complement the dry creek bed and refresh the existing space for added curb appeal, we brought in new varieties and worked with some of the original plants, relocating several, for a broader plant pallet.

To bring in year-round color and texture, we added in low maintenance, deer resistant shrubs and perennials that tolerate clay soil well. Several perennials were changed out for shrubs, including Orange Rocket barberry, Ruby Slippers oakleaf hydrangea & a Merlot redbud for foliage color, along with easy long-blooming perennials to extend the seasons. Boxwood and lilacs were also planted around the utilities to camouflage and bring in additional color.

Backyard

Our team was charged with minimizing landscape bed space and designing an area that the homeowner’s pets could play in without getting muddy. The shade from overhead trees made it difficult for grass to grow, resulting in a muddy yard, which in turn made puppy bath time a daily routine! We started the process by bringing in our team of arborists to prune the trees and open up the canopy as well as remove hazardous findings.

The existing boulder wall near their patio was starting to fail and the concrete was cracking. A new limestone wall and paver patio were installed to create additional outdoor lounging space and secure the slope below the enclosed porch. Boulders from the previous wall were repurposed within the design along a steep slope to help slow water and minimize erosion.

The muddy flagstone path near the entrance was replaced with a solid paver landing and raised beds for a clean, safe, beautiful walkway from the fence gate to the back deck. Garden beds were minimized and planted with shade tolerant sturdy plants such as rhododendron, Green Tower boxwoods, oakleaf hydrangea and barberries.

To complete the look in the back area, we installed new sod throughout.
