A blank slate at this new construction home made way for a backyard update, complete with foundational plantings, a stone walkway, and a dual-purpose island planting bed. With a focus on grilling, gathering and entertaining with friends and family, the update was planned with purpose – both functional and aesthetic.
Specific plantings were selected to frame the foundation home, deck and patio areas and were made to offer color across many seasons, including dogwoods, Karl Forester grasses, Bobo hydrangeas and arborvitae. An update to the sideyard was established not only to provide an aesthetic feature against the home but to control water runoff and washout issues along the slope. An Iowa Buff Flagstone walkway, low maintenance plantings, steps and an Iowa Buff wall landing at the gate were installed to remedy the issues. An island planting bed was created toward the edge of the backyard and served a dual purpose – as a privacy screen and a focal point in the yard. A combination of shade trees, shrubs and grasses, topped with black mulch throughout the planting beds, set the stage for decades of growth.
