Landscaping & Maintenance

Seasonal Gardens + Patio

Residential

To add additional space to the backyard for grilling and dining, our team designed this curved patio to complement the existing covered deck. For seasonal interest and sequential blooms, low-maintenance garden beds were created around the patio, adding in trees and taller plantings to create a privacy screen. Unilock Avante Ashlar pavers in Almond Grove were used for the patio while Iowa Buff Planter stone edging and Iowa Buff Flagstone were used for the garden beds.

With a backyard that sits next to a wooded area, careful consideration was given to plant selection for deer resistant varietals. The privacy screen utilizes an assortment of sargent crabapple, columnar Norway spruce and Fat Albert spruce. Wrapping around the house, the garden beds are filled with shrubs (boxwood, birchleaf spirea, barberry, hydrangeas and rose of Sharon) and Knock Out® Roses as well as deer resistant perennials (betony, salvia, bee balm, phlox and dianthus).

The front island bed was added a few years after the patio and garden beds to replace a lost tree. For symmetry and complement to the work that had already been done, the curved island was planted with crabapples and coordinating perennials.
