The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a Department of Defense office which promotes cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers and assists in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military commitment.

The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for their support of their employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve. The Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 through ESGR to award publicly recognizes employers who provide exceptional support to their Guard and Reserve employees. Since the first awards presented in 1996, a total of 205 employers have received the prestigious award. Today, up to 15 awards are presented each year to employers in the categories of large business, small business and the public sector. Employers are nominated by a Guard or Reserve member who is employed by the organization they are nominating, or from a family member.

Although only 15 companies in the U.S. win this award, it is an honor to be recognized for our support to our Guard and Reserve employees.
