Plant Spotlight: Apple Twist Combo

During the month of June in our Garden Center, we will be highlighting Apple Twist Combo trees. A deciduous tree from the rose family, the apple tree is best known for the sweet, crisp fruit it bears. Grown for thousands of years in Asia and Europe, we have the colonists to thank for bringing it stateside. Early on, the apple was prized for cider making, with growers wanting one variety for tartness, one for flavor and one for aroma. Apples can be grown in all 50 U.S. states and are an excellent source of fiber, not to mention they are free of fat, sodium and cholesterol.

Traditionally, apple trees must be planted in pairs so they can cross pollinate to produce fruit. Apple Twist Combo trees make it easy – there are two apple varieties twisted and grafted together, so they cross-pollinate each other. This means you only have to plant one tree, taking up less yard space while still providing you with two flavor options. Over time, the two varieties learn to grow together on their own. They may bear fruit while still in the container before planting, but full production will not take place for two to five years after being transplanted into the ground.

Here at the Garden Center, we start off the season by carrying three varieties of the Apple Twist Combo. We currently have stock remaining for the Braeburn/Gala twist variety. You can read more about it below:
